Diabetes Information on the Internet

The sites listed below provide useful information for people who have diabetes, and originate from credible sources such as government agencies, diabetes organizations, medical institutions, health-care professionals, people with diabetes, and reputable health-care companies. Before you start browsing, however, a word of caution is in order. The medical information that you find on the Web should only be used as a basis for further investigation and discussions with your able health-care professional, never as the sole basis for decisions on the treatment or management of diabetes.

American Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.org/) provides a variety of information on diabetes including current news, newly diagnosed, nutrition, exercise, recipes, risk test, tips and recommendations.

Canadian Diabetes Association’s (http://www.diabetes.ca/) mission is to promote the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy. They provide a wealth of information about diabetes including latest advances in diabetes research as well as the basic facts about diabetes.

CDC Diabetes Home Page (http://www.cdc.gov/doc.do/id/0900f3ec802723eb),an outstanding resource from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides Diabetes At-a-Glance, and overview of the statistics on diabetes in the United States, a National Diabetes Fact Sheet, a bibliography with abstracts of diabetes articles from the CDC, a guide for primary care practitioners, a database of state-based diabetes control programs, and links to other diabetes resources.

children with DIABETES (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/) is an "online community for kids, families, and adults with Type I diabetes." Resources include an online Diabetes Clinic, which offers diabetes basics, food and nutrition information, information about products you can order, and listings and information about diabetes camps. "Ask the Diabetes Team" allows you to pose questions to a team of experienced diabetes health-care professionals. Other resources include documents addressing the specific needs of parents, kids, and adults; a database of friends willing to correspond about diabetes; a message board; chat rooms; and much more.

Diabetes Mall (http://www.diabetesnet.com/)on DiabetesNet combines research updates, diabetes news, and useful information on managing diabetes with an online catalog of diabetes products including books, software, pump accessories, videos, and more.

Diabetes Self Management Magazine (http://www.diabetes-self-mgmt.com/), provides articles, recipes, and answers to questions from the most recent issue and from back issues as well.

Diabetes Well (http://www.diabeteswell.com/) was developed by the Pacific Medical Research Foundation, whose mission is to explore new clinical treatments for diabetes and its physical complications and to educate doctors, health-care professionals, and people with diabetes about how to manage and live successfully. Diabetes Well offers general information on diabetes and its management for both people with little previous knowledge and those with more experience, as well as resources for professionals.

International Diabetes Federation (http://www.idf.org/) provides international diabetes news, learn about the IDF and its mission, preview Federation publications, and find out about diabetes happenings around the world, including World Diabetes Day.

Joslin Diabetes Center (http:www.joslin.harvard.edu/) you can find contact information for the center and its numerous affiliates, legislative updates on diabetes-related issues, and a list of current clinical trials at the Center. The site also has an Online Diabetes Library and a catalog of Joslin publications that you can order over the phone.

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (http://www.jdfcure.org/info_pub.htm) offers general information about diabetes, an online version of their magazine, Countdown, information about the JDF, updates on diabetes research and grants, government relations, and information on fund-raising programs such as Walk for the Cure.
