Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf
Hogan, Ben
Amazon.com Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library. Review Frank Sadler Professional, Bellingham Country Club, Bellingham, Washington It's the first time words and illustrations have made golfing technique absolutely clear. I'm applying the lessons to my teaching program here and highly recommending them to my pupils. I'd say it's the greatest instruction series of all time. Women are particularly keen on it. It'll make a lot of new golfers -- good golfers. Book Description The building blocks of winning golf -- from one of the masters of the game. Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 -- if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step-by-step and stroke by stroke. In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations -- as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin.

Harvey Penick'S Little Red Book : Lessons And Teachings From A Lifetime In Golf
Penick, Harvey
Amazon.com Before titanium drivers, before oversized heads and bubble shafts, before electronic systems to tell you how far you are from the pin, golf was much the same game it is today. The lessons Harvey Penick taught in the pre-gadget days still stand. The golf swing is basically the same, and Penick could teach it better than anybody. For most of his life, he never intended to publish his Little Red Book, a notebook of golf wisdom and anecdotes that he compiled with the idea that he'd pass it on to his son. But, for the sake of history, it's a good thing that he changed his mind. Contained in its 175 pages is just about all you need to know about golf from a technical standpoint, along with Penick's priceless memories of working with famous pros, teaching absolute nobodies to get the ball in the air, and finding a horde of bat guano and hauling it across town in a pickup truck to fertilize his golf course. This book makes you feel good about playing golf, that you're part of something steeped in ritual and mystery and tradition, and that the game was played perfectly well before perimeter-weighted, graphite-shafted irons came along. From Library Journal Penick, a golf instructor who has been credited with improving the scores of several professionals on the mens and ladies' tours (including Tom Kite and Sandra Palmer) here provides both physical and psychological tips for golfers. He also instructs on the preparation required before approaching the first tee. Though the value of this book is its information, libraries owning previous works on the mental aspects of golf (e.g., Peter Cranford's The Winning Touch in Golf: A Psychological Approach... read more Book Description Harvey Penick's life in golf began when he started caddying at the Austin, (Texas), Country Club at age eight. Eighty-one years later he is still there, still dispensing wisdom to pros and beginners alike. His stature in the golf world is reflected in the remarkable array of champions he's worked with, both men and women, including U.S. Open champion and golf's leading money winner Tom Kite, Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, and LPGA Hall of Famers Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls, and Kathy Whitworth. It is not for nothing that the Teacher of the Year Award given by the Golf Teachers Association is called the Harvey Penick Award. Now, after sixty years of keeping notes on the things he's seen and learned and on the golfing greats he's taught, Penick is finally letting his Little Red Book (named for the red notebook he's always kept) be seen by the golf world. His simple, direct, practical wisdom pares away all the hypertechnical jargon that's grown up around the golf swing, and lets all golfers, whatever their level, play their best. He avoids negative words; when Tom Kite asked him if he should "choke down" on the club for a particular shot, Harvey told him to "grip down" instead, to keep the word "choke" from entering his mind. He advises golfers to have dinner with people who are good putters; their confidence may rub off, and it's certainly better than listening to bad putters complain. And he shows why, if you've got a bad grip, the last thing you want is a good swing. Throughout, Penick's love of golf and, more importantly, his love of teaching shine through. He gets as much pleasure from watching a beginner get the ball in the air for the first time as he does when one of his students wins the U.S. Open. Harvey Penick's Little Red Book is an instant classic, a book to rank with Ben Hogan's Modern Fundamentals of Golf and Tommy Armour's How to Play Your Best Golf All the Time.

In the Zone: Transcendent Experience in Sports
Murphy, Michael
From Library Journal This work is an updated edition of the authors' The Psychic Side of Sports (1978) and purports to define the frontiers of human potential. Murphy reports the experience of mystical sensations and altered sensory perceptions by athletes during extraordinary physical achievements. Countless subjective oral accounts are quoted with little skepticism; all seem to be taken at face value. The last section of the book contains White's well-executed 1500-item bibliography updated from the 1978 edition. The breadth of athletic achievement surveyed in both text and bibliography is extremely wide, ranging from Charles Lindbergh to Michael Jordan to Tibetan lung-gom-pa runners. Even Carlos Casteneda, Barbra Streisand, fire-walking, and sword-swallowing somehow make it into the text. Although this study is a bit too subjective and offers too many pat answers, it will likely find an audience in large sports collections. John Maxymuk, Rutgers Univ. Lib., Camden, N.J. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. Synopsis Drawing on more than 4500 stories from both professional and amateur athletes, this is an examination of sportsmen and sportswomen's experiences of trancendance while participating in sporting activities. They include tales of ESP, out-of-body experiences and fits of strength. Murphy and White uncover this hidden dimension of sport and draw parallels between these uncanny experiences and the fabled powers of mystics and yogis. First published in 1978, this book includes new material. Michael... read more

The Inner Game of Golf
Gallwey, W. Timothy
Amazon.com Long before Dr. Bob Rotella made tweaking a golfer's head as important as tweaking his swing, Tim Gallwey, who knew virtually nothing about the mechanics of the game when he penned the first edition of this visionary work, understood that even the best technique collapses when the mind cracks under the game's pressure. Gallwey's ultimate insight into the game was that a golfer's mind is a golfer's worst enemy; too much thinking only gets in the way. The new edition of this groundbreaking instructional continues to preach such "Inner Game" fundamentals as trust, concentration, visualization, feel, and relaxation, and is full of what Gallwey calls "awareness exercises." Much of what he has to say seems obvious in a world in which most good athletes have some kind of psychological guru always at the ready to help improve performance, but Gallwey, with his bagful of anecdotes and encouragement, was one of the first to explore this uncharted territory, and still remains one of the most readable. --Jeff Silverman --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Ingram A revised edition of the best-selling golf guide explains how golfers can take strokes off their game by diminishing mental obstacles to doing their best, analyzing common errors in every swing, assessing self-image and self-doubt, and introducing ""awareness instruction."" 25,000 first printing." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description Teaches golfers to dramatically improve their golf score by applying principles of psychology. Yep, this one still sells, too!

The Pilates Body: The Ultimate At-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--Without Machines
Siler, Brooke
Amazon.com Thin-but-fit supermodels like Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow and actresses like Ally McBeal's Courtney Thorne-Smith and Liv Tyler swear by Pilates workouts to keep their figures toned and flexible. The Pilates Body is the latest in a string of books dedicated to this fitness program, which is now soaring in popularity nearly 100 years after it was first developed by Joseph Pilates in Germany in the early 1900s. While today's Pilates studios take advantage of patented and intimidating-looking equipment that costs thousands of dollars (and therefore charge accordingly for private sessions), each exercise in The Pilates Body can be performed with just an exercise mat. While all parts of the body are used in the exercises, the focus is on the abdominals, or "powerhouse," which support the back; this makes Pilates an ideal exercise for those with back problems--or those hoping to prevent them. Author Brooke Siler, who trained with Romana Kryzanowska, the oldest living protégé of Joseph Pilates, organizes her book impeccably. After discussing proper alignment and ways to modify the exercises for those with neck, knee, or lower back pain, she jumps right into the 60-plus exercises, which are divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. What differentiates Siler's book from the other Pilates titles is that she includes a disclaimer about the models: "The models in this book have been training in the Pilates method for years. Although their bodies may seem to represent an unrealistic ideal for many, they have worked hard to achieve their fitness goals. I hope in earnest that they do not intimidate but inspire." Also, each exercise is given a two-page spread of its own, and is accompanied by clear photographs and helpful graphics. For example, for the "inner-thigh lifts," there's an illustration suggesting that you imagine a stack of books on the lifting leg to help you increase resistance. Each exercise also includes what Siler calls "The Inside Scoop," or tips she's learned from training hundreds of clients. These include the main goal of the exercise; simple modifications for beginners; important keys to remember while doing the move; and no-nos to prevent injury. While it's important to concentrate and get the technique of each exercise down, Siler's book is perfect for anyone looking for a simple exercise program that promises results, requires a minimum of time, and can be done at home or while traveling. --Erica Jorgensen Book Description The Pilates® method may be today's hottest exercise, but it has been endorsed by physicians for almost a century. Originally developed by Joseph H. Pilates to help strengthen and condition muscles, Pilates is the ultimate mind-body exercise for anyone who wants to tone, streamline, and realign their body without the bulked-up results of more conventional workout methods. Now, in The Pilates® Body, author Brooke Siler--one of the most sought-after personal trainers in the country and owner... read more

Steve Elkington's Five Fundamentals of Golf
Elkington, Steve
Amazon.com Ask any foursome of professional golfers who possesses the most sound swing on tour, and the response will be a gimme: Australian Steve Elkington. In Fundamentals, the PGA champ tees up his secrets, breaking down the essentials into pretty much the same pentathlon--grip, set-up, backswing, downswing, and tempo--as the great Ben Hogan did in his '50s classic, Five Lessons. Elkington's style is anecdotal, personal, conversational, and friendly; he talks you through his methods and thinking, with an emphasis on getting things right from the start rather than fixing faults acquired along the way. Throughout, he offers particular tips for advanced players, and he ends with useful advice on equipment, a section geared specifically to shoring up the short game, and an excellent series of exercises geared to keep golfing muscles loose and limber. Where Five Fundamentals really scores is in its ability to show as well as tell. It is peppered with helpful still photographs. Better yet, the top and bottom corners of the pages use the old flicker technique; flip them quickly and you'll be able to see Elk's sweet swing in action whacking a driver, a six-iron, and a wedge from the sand. In his hands, it looks so easy; the challenge is making yours look the same. --Jeff Silverman About the Author Steve Elkington has won the best and biggest tournaments in golf: the NCAA (twice, with the University of Houston); the Tournament of Champions (twice); the Players Championship (again, twice); and the PGA Championship. In 1995 he won the Vardon Trophy for lowest stroke average on the Tour, averaging 69.62 for the entire year. Coauthor Curt Sampson, himself a former club and touring professional, has written five other books, including Hogan and The Masters. Book Description If you've watched PGA champion Steve Elkington play golf, you know what the perfect swing looks like in action: an elegant, apparently effortless stroke with stunningly accurate force. Now in this instructive book, Elkington shares the techniques and strategies behind that trademark swing, which his colleagues have named Best on Tour five years running. The secret is mastering the Five Fundamentals--the grip, the setup, the backswing, the downswing, and tempo. "My aim is to provide a benchmark, a basis on which any player can build his own, authentic swing," Elkington writes. "I won't discuss faults or fixes. Golf is a series of linked fundamentals; let's eliminate your faults from the moment you pick up the club." Applying the "flicker" or "flip book" technique in swing sequences with the driver, six-iron, and sand wedge, Five Fundamentals shows the rhythm and balance of Elkington's motion better than any still photograph could convey. Combining these swing sequences with lively text, breezy personal anecdotes, and special sections addressed to the advanced player, Elkington takes you step-by-step through the five fundamentals, providing a program to improve your game notably. Practical, straightforward, and specific, Five Fundamentals uncovers profound and often unexpected insights from the owner of the best swing in golf. It's destined to become a fundamental part of every golfer's library.

Ultimate Sports Nutrition
Hatfield, Frederick C.
From Publishers Weekly Hatfield, editor of Sports Fitness magazine and author of Bodybuilding: A Scientific Approach, focuses on sports requiring great strength. But his balanced concept of nutrition for the athlete, whatever the sport, precludes the shortcuts bodybuilders and weightlifters take, which sometimes lead to the use of steroids. The author collects up-to-date information on biochemical responses of the body and shows how athletes can take maximum advantage of them. The long section on amino acids and energy enhancers is especially useful, and the nutritional requirements of some 20 sports are covered more effectively than in other guides.
