| Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide Burton Goldberg Group (Compiler) Amazon.com The Definitive Guide is known as the Bible of alternative medicine. You may very well want to use a dictionary stand for this hefty tome; it weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Nearly 400 doctors (M.D.s, Ph.D.s, naturopaths, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, and osteopaths) contribute their cutting-edge knowledge, and the list of names is impressive. | Eight Weeks to Optimum Health: A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body's Natural Healing Power Weil, Andrew Amazon.com "Health," Dr. Andrew Weil writes, "is a dynamic and temporary state of equilibrium destined to break down as conditions change." In other words, there's no such thing as the type of health that allows you to feel equally great every day of your life. Instead, Weil suggests, your goal should be to improve your resilience to disease, and while you're at it, feel more joy and strength. As to how you should gain this strength, joy, and resilience, Weil doesn't come on with a hard sell to give up every bad habit or all of the foods you enjoy. Instead, he suggests gradual changes: clean your pantry of whatever cooking oils you have there, except olive oil; start taking vitamin C three times a day; walk a few minutes a day; eat some fish and broccoli. The program is so simple and sensible that anyone trying it probably will feel better in a week. The program then gets progressively more involved--more supplements; more of a shift toward a diet based on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; more exercise. Besides these steady changes, each week's program has a focus: In week 2, you start drinking bottled or filtered water; week 3 focuses on organic produce; week 4, on sleep; week 5, using a steam bath or sauna; week 6, trying a "universal tonic" like ginseng; week 7, volunteering in your community; and finally, in week 8, figuring out how to integrate permanently the elements of the program into your life. Even those who don't go for the entire program will probably find something here to like--the recipes, maybe, or the suggestion that you cut back on strenuous types of exercise like running and competitive sports in favor of brisk walks. It's perfectly useful either way: as a total lifestyle overhaul, or a series of suggestions, any one or two of which will probably help you feel better. --Lou Schuler --This text refers to the Paperback edition. | Nature's Cures: From Acupressure & Aromatherapy to Walking & Yoga, the Ultimate Guide to the Best Scientifically Proven, Drug_Free Healing Methods Castleman, Michael From Publishers Weekly This well-researched compendium by the author of The Healing Herbs provides an upbeat introduction to drug-free healing methods. Subjects, covered in separate chapters, include acupuncture, low-fat eating, sleep, weight training, cognitive therapy, vitamins and minerals, yoga and supplementary cancer therapies (in the chapter "Complementary Cancer Care"). Quoting liberally from leading researchers and/or healers in the respective areas, Castleman describes the therapies and suggests how-to steps for applying them. As is expected of Rodale's offerings, the prose is clear, straightforward and not marked by authorial personality. "Resources" is an annotated appendix listing information on books, magazines, newsletters, videos, products and national organizations pertaining to each topic. This is a well-reasoned guide for those in need of DIY advice and rational explanations of alternative, non-pharmaceutical therapies. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Castleman (The Healing Herbs, Rodale, 1991), who is considered one of the top health writers in the country, has compiled one of the finest, most-comprehensive volumes on alternative healing, written for lay readers. He provides the history of, and scientific studies for, 33 different therapies, ranging from acupressure to yoga. Also included is an A-Z Cure Finder to locate... read more |

| The Oxygen Breakthrough: 30 Days to an Illness-Free Life Hendler, Sheldon Saul M.D. Ph.D. From Publishers Weekly Hendler, a researcher and private physician, adopts a fresh, optimistic approach to debilitating and degenerative diseases, from the nonspecific Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) to chronic asthma and AIDS. His "breakthrough" focuses on a central but oft-forgotten fitness mechanism: proper breathing. Fatigue and immunosuppression, he points out, are often caused and always aggravated by poor oxygenation, both through the lungs ("outer breathing") and through the cell membranes ("inner breathing"). A few sensible breathing exercises will help readers understand and correct their outer breathing; frank, sensible discussions of diet and vitamins address microscopic oxygenation. But while Hendler provides valuable anecdotal advice on breathing, eating, exercising and managing stress, his enthusiasm for medical progress leads him astray when he introduces readers to lab tests and experimental drugs properly utilized (as he sometimes notes) only by professionals. Much of the book summarizes parts of Hendler's Complete Guide to Anti-Aging Nutrients . Illustrations not seen by PW . Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Hendler, a California internist, claims that the breathing techniques illustrated in this book can control and reverse the effects of asthma, allergies, PMS, viral diseases such as AIDS and the common cold, as well as a host of other afflictions. He says he has used these exercises to restore the vitality of critically ill patients when other therapies had failed. He claims that his exercises, when used in conjunction with a low-fat diet supplemented with vitamins, minerals, herbs, and amino... read more --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. |

| PDR for Herbal Medicines (1st Ed) No Author Amazon.com Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives to pharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal reference on hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patient wants to add herbs--let's say St. John's wort--to his drug regimen. Should the patient stop taking the Paxil he's been on for depression, and if so, how long must he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what's the recommended dosage? The PDR for Herbal Medicines will go a long way towards answering such questions. The physician in this case would learn, after consulting the PDR, that "St. John's wort taken concomitantly with an SSRI ... may lead to an increased effect and possible toxicity 'serotonin syndrome', e.g., sweating, tremor, flushing, confusion and agitation." The same physician will also learn that the German Federal Health Authority's Commission E, which has studied the effects of hundreds of herbs, approved St. John's wort for depressive moods, among other conditions. For more information, the physician can read about the trade names, descriptions of all the medicinal parts of the plant, actions and pharmacology (including the compounds and their effects, with citations), the results of clinical trials, contraindications, precautions and adverse reactions (photosensitization is a biggie for St. John's wort), dosage information, and a complete list of literature citations. The second edition of this mammoth guide includes over 100 entries more than the first, bringing the total to more than 700. Additions include a selection of Asian herbs, such as Buplerum Chinese (also known as Chinese thoroughwax), which is used in Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, and homeopathic preparations; a directory of manufacturers (with Internet addresses when available), a safety guide (don't use kava kava while nursing), and more. There's even a section that lists unproven uses for each herb. But make no mistake: this is a mainstream reference that relies on scientific proof above all. Therefore, this is not a guide for everyone, but for scientific and medical reference, it's a helpful and comprehensive resource, and even those who push the herbal envelope will find much valuable information here. --Stefanie Durbin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Book News, Inc. Draws mostly on the findings of the German Regulatory Authority for herbal medicine, called Commission E, but fills in herbs not covered by the commission from other literature. Each section describes the therapy followed by resource lists including names and addresses of associations, publications, books, educational resources, and Internet resources in the US and abroad. Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR from Gazette.net Just a few years ago, libraries nationwide only offered limited numbers of books about so-called holistic and alternative medicine. But as the practice of such fields has received more attention from mainstream media outlets, Montgomery County libraries have followed suit. Although the stock of books on nontraditional medicine vary by library, here's a sampling of a few titles share by all county branches and give both a macro and micro view of the emerging field. |

| Ritual Healing in Suburban America McGuire, Meredith B. Arthur Kleinman, M.D., Harvard University "One of the more provocative studies of why middle America is making increasing use of ritual healing and what that choice tells us of problems with biomedical care in technological institutions... A welcome addition to anthropological studies of ritual healing in other societies, and it illuminates a huge component of our health care system that is poorly understood." Health and Healing "An all too rare volume, namely a scholarly work on the practice of healing in suburban or what we might call middle-class American. McGuire, perhaps uniquely, has set ot the religious or "ritual" healing beliefs and practices that are usually strictly segregated and kept apart... Any one who takes seriously the need to understand "healing"... should obtain this book." |
