Awakening Spirits (Religion and Spirituality)
Brown, Tom, Jr.
From Library Journal A tracker, outdoorsman, and survival school founder, Brown shares some of the insights he gained from his Native American teacher named Grandfather. The book explains how Grandfather gained his wisdom, how Brown learned these intuitive skills of spirit, and how the reader can translate them into everyday life through a meditative process called Sacred Silence. It requires basic relaxation and comfort of body, freedom from distraction, and concentration of mind and spirit. Readers interested in shamanistic teaching, Native American traditions, spiritual healing, development of intuition, and sensitivity to external nature may find this book absorbing and useful as a guide. Entering the Circle : A Russian Psychiatrist's Journey into Siberian Shamanism
Kharitidi, Olga

Entering the Circle: The Secrets of Ancient Siberian Wisdom Discovered by a Russian Psychiatrist
Kharitidi, Olga
From Publishers Weekly The term "shaman" is Russian and, until recently, was applied only to members of the indigenous tribes of Siberia and Central Asia by such scholars as Mircea Eliade. This exciting autobiography cum spiritual adventure by a Soviet psychiatrist is the first popular account of initiation into those tribes' ancient and mysterious traditions. Kharitidi writes (with no translator) in the slightly stilted English of a native Russian-speaker, an effect that highlights the fantastic nature of her encounters. From the grim state hospital where patients are fed only gruel to the isolated Altai Mountains, Kharitidi is inexorably led to Umai, a female shaman who passes her power to Kharitidi on her death and who continues to instruct her from the spirit world. The author's involvement with shamanism is fraught with danger, for in the Soviet Union, interest in the occult can lead to psychiatric commitment. But Kharitidi manages secretly to incorporate her new powers into her practice at the hospital. During her trance voyages, she visits Belovodia, more commonly known in the West by its Tibetan name of Shambhala, where a parallel human race with advanced spiritual knowledge hints at a radical new future for humanity. Others are also discovering Belovodia, Kharitidi learns, particularly a Soviet physicist researching the nature of time. Whether one swallows this whole, with salt or not at all, there's no doubt that with its classic New Age elements?the skeptical protagonist turned believer, exotic locales and esoteric knowledge, suspense and synchronicity?this is a great read that should sell briskly. Drawings, not seen by PW. $75,000 ad/promo; BOMC, QPB and One Spirit selections; film rights to North Tower Films; translation rights sold in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland; author tour. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description: When the young Russian psychiatrist Olga Kharitidi set out on an impetuous journey into the snowbound Altai Mountains of Siberia, she never dreamed that her experience there would shatter and rebuild her view of reality. Among the wintry villages and pine forests of Siberia, guided by mysterious native sages, Kharitidi unearthed the wellspring of the worlds mystical traditions, discovered deep secrets of healing and magic, and encountered revolutionary teachings about the true nature of the human soul. Entering the Circle shares her thrilling adventure--and her stunning discoveries--with the world. As a dedicated young psychiatrist at an austere state hospital in the former Soviet Union, Olga Kharitidi battled the difficulties of Soviet life and the constraints of medical science in her fight to save her suffering patients. Joining an ailing friend on a spur-of-the-moment trip into Siberia's Altai Mountains, Kharitidi was launched on an unexpected journey of revelation when she was taken into apprenticeship by an enigmatic native shaman. The wild adventure that followed would forever change Kharitidi's view of healing, science, consciousness--and the potential of the human soul itself. Entering the Circle shares Kharitidi's remarkable true story and the revelatory teachings she received during her sojourn with mysterious sages of Siberia. Guided through bizarre, magical, and often terrifying experiences by her shaman-teacher Umai--and by a radical Soviet physicist whose studies challenged the very nature of reality--Kharitidi unlocked a storehouse of spiritual learning that had lain hidden in inaccessible Siberia for centuries. Deep in Siberia, Kharitidis path of knowledge led her ever closer to unlocking the secrets of Belovochi, also known as Shambala, a fabled civilization of highly evolved humans who have for eons spread their sacred knowledge through the world's great faiths, including Buddhism, Christian mysticism, Sufism, and Vedic Hinduism. She learned, through firsthand experience, that waking reality--the fabric of our daily lives--is only the near shore of our Spirit Lake, the sea of

Healing States : A Journey Into the World of Spiritual Healing and Shamanism
Villoldo, Alberto
From Publishers Weekly Although the authors of this provocative exploration into the spiritual realms of healing are trained in the orthodoxies of Western medicine and psychology (both have doctorates and are researchers and scientists in San Francisco), their inquiries into "mind over matter" phenomena have led them to conclude that science alone is inadequate in treating human illness. (On this subject, they note the question put to them by a Peruvian shaman: "In the training of your healers, what steps do they take to attune Mother Earth and the Great Spirit?") By observing diverse parapsychological and metaphysical methods of mediums, spiritists and others following "indigenous" healing from ancient to contemporary societies, Villoldo and Krippner enhance our concept of health by incorporating ideas that are ignored by allopathic medicine, a process advocated by the World Health Organization. The freshness of their approach results in a steady level of stimulation. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description: A colorful and compelling examination of evidence for the mind's ability to heal, taking a step into the fascinating world of psychic healing and shamanism. 80 black-and-white photographs.

Mad Bear: Spirit, Healing, and the Sacred in the Life of a Native American Medicine Man
Boyd, Doug
From Booklist This is a can't-put-down page-turner, chock-full of magic and adventure. Mad Bear, a Tuscarora shaman and Indian-rights activist, is an unforgettable personage of gargantuan appetite and profound spirituality; and Boyd is masterly at pacing the incidents he recounts, marvelously delicate about keeping the focus on Mad Bear while acknowledging his own cross-cultural struggles. A major spiritual battle for the planet's health is being waged, Mad Bear felt, and his own experience testifies to the intensity of the struggle; indeed, Mad Bear, once set upon by a virulently poisonous insect, nearly died in the struggle. The magic in Mad Bear's life that Boyd describes is all the more extraordinary for occurring in extremely ordinary surroundings: for instance, spirits knock on the windows while Mad Bear eats donuts, the shaman senses a coming earthquake while in a seedy motel in California, and eagles attend a potluck dinner. What with the still expanding interest in shamanism and Native American traditions, Boyd's effort should find a ready audience. Pat Monaghan From Kirkus Reviews Boyd (Mystics, Magicians, and Medicine People, 1989) serves as traveling secretary and appreciative witness to the actions of Mad Bear, a Tuscarora medicine man, in this pedantic account of their travels in the late 1970s. The pair take a spiritual and geographical journey across the United States, attending lectures and conferences devoted to healing, spirituality, and ecological and political awareness in the company of swamis, rabbis, Tibetan lamas, holistic practitioners, Japanese monks, and... read more

Welcome Home : Following Your Soul's Journey Home
Ingerman, Sandra
From Library Journal The author is a shamanic healer who journeys on behalf of her clients in order to facilitate healing. A book on what to do after one has been through a healing crisis is badly needed; unfortunately, this isn't it. While this is what Ingerman purports to do here she misses the mark entirely, treating the reader to self-indulgent accounts from her own private journal as well as those of her clients in a tone usually reserved for young children. She exhorts us to take responsibility for ourselves and the future but fails to provide any guidelines as to how to go about it. The work is also repetitive and badly written and edited. Not recommended. - Marilyn E. Schafer, Canadian Memorial Chiropractic Coll., Toronto Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Ingerman is a strong voice against psychic fragmentation--a woman here introduces herself as "myself, my thirteen-year-old, and my five-year-old"--as well as for strong personal integration and integrity. A sort of shamanic Wendy Kaminer (I'm Dysfunctional, You're Dysfunctional, 1992), Ingerman pushes her readers to question New Age orthodoxy and to find their own routes to wholeness. Although not as polished as her earlier Soul Retrieval (1991), this book is still meaty enough to appeal to... read more Book Description Sandra Ingerman's deeply moveing debut, Soul Retrieval, captivated readers with its introduction of shamanic journeying, an ancient tradition of healig. With the characteristic warmth, passion, and authenticcity that have earned her worldwide recognition, Ingerman now continues to share her lifework with Welcome Home, an empowering action plan for creating a more positive future by truly letting go of blame and guilt.

Zuni Fetishes: Using Native American Objects for Meditation, Reflection, and Insight
Bennett, Hal Zina, Ph.D.

He provides an excellent guide to Zuni traditions and an intriguing picture of their early life, along with detailed instructions for using fetishes for mediation, reflection, and insight in modern life. He describes key fetish figures, including the Guardian of the Six Regions, their legendary meanings, and the personal qualities each figure can support and help its owner develop.
