Nutritious Art

Ants on a Log

Supplies: celery, peanut butter* or cream cheese, raisins. Fill crevice in celery with peanut butter* or cream cheese and add raisins on top. Try dried cranberries for red ants on a log

Sailboats
Supplies: celery, peanut butter*, toothpicks, white paper. Spread peanut butter* on celery, cut out a small triangle from white paper and attach to a toothpick. Stick the toothpick in the celery and you have a sailboat.


Go Fishing
Supplies: goldfish crackers, celery and/or carrot sticks (fishing poles), peanut butter*.
Put the peanut butter* and carrot and celery sticks on a plate, goldfish in a bowl. The kids dip a fishing pole in the peanut butter* and "catch" a fish with it.

Apple Volcanoes
Supplies: apples, peanut butter*, raisins, granola. Cut the top off the apple. Core the apple and discard. Fill the center of the apple with peanut butter*. Sprinkle granola, raisins or whatever you may like on top. Eat and Enjoy!!

Wagons
Supplies: celery stalks, toothpicks, carrot rounds, peanut butter*, raisins. Cut celery stalks crosswise into two pieces each, about 3" long. Push toothpicks through sides of celery to form axles for four wheels. Fill celery wagon with peanut butter*, cheese or dressing. Stick carrot rounds onto ends of toothpicks. Cover tips with raisins. Stick a toothpick into the end of the celery at a 45 degree angle to form wagon handle. Cover tip with raisins.

Peanut butter* Playdough 

Supplies: 12 oz peanut butter*, 6 T honey, ˝-1˝ cup(s) nonfat dry milk, carrot circles, celery sticks, raisins, apple pieces, other pieces of fruits and vegetables, napkins and paper plates. Combine peanut butter*, honey and dry milk, add more dry milk if needed to keep it from being sticky. Put some on a plate with fruits and vegetables of various shapes. Create your own food art masterpiece; people, animals, machines, funny faces, buildings, etc.

Peanut butter* Chocolate Chip Apples
Supplies: apple, peanut butter**, Rice Krispies, raisins. Cut apple in half and cut out core. Have kids spread peanut butter* on apple half. On foil or wax paper have different piles for dipping apples in: a pile of Rice Krispies and a pile of raisins. Let the kids smash the peanut butter* side of apple in each pile! Sounds gross? Try them - You'll love them! (less healthy version- add a pile of chocolate chips to dip.

*Note: Please use peanut butter whose only ingredient is peanuts. Other peanut butters have many other unhealthy ingredients (i.e., hydrogenated oils).

American Medical Association’s Interactive Health (http://www.ama-assn.org/consumer/gnrl.htm) provides information, including nutrition, weight, fitness and family health, that is personalized on-line.

CyberDiet (http://www.cyberdiet.com/) offers its visitors a means of achieving their specific goals through extensive use of on-line interactive modules as well as detailed nutritional information and motivation.

American Dietetic Association (http://www.eatright.org/) and its National Center for Nutrition and Dietetics promote optimal nutrition, health and well being.

Fitness Partner Connection Jumpsite (http://primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/) provides information on a variety of topics including kids fitness, food and nutrition, sports medicine, weight management and more.

FitnessLink (http://www.fitnesslink.com/) provides the resources you need to get fit and stay fit, whether you're an exercise enthusiast, a fitness airprofessional, or a "newbie" to fitness. The latest fitness news is updated daily.

Nutrition Analysis Tool (http://fnic.nal.usda.gov/nal_display/index.php?info_center=4&tax_level=2&tax_subject=256&topic_id=1325) is a web based program that allows anyone to analyze the foods they eat for various different nutrients. This tool is completely free and easy to use.
