1. Whatis Health Maps?

Health Maps is acomputer-based health and wellness learning and education program that providesone-on-one support with Internet health research and understanding technology.Compassionate, service-oriented staff facilitate each individual’s search for,and interpretation of, a variety of information resources available throughcomputers, CD-ROMs and the Internet.

The Health Maps area isequipped with four Internet-connected computers available for public use forhealth-related research. In addition, a separate classroom is equipped with fourmore Internet-connected computers for smallgroup and one-one-one educational programs.

The mission of the Health Mapsprogram is to empower those living and working in North Hawai’i communities toparticipate in personal health decisions to significantly improve their health-related quality of life throughaccess to, and use of, valid, reliable Internet-based information.

Theinformation found can be used to prevent illness, to understand diagnoses, toexplore treatment options, to seek support, to become more informed about healthand wellness topics of interest and to make informed decisions. HealthMaps’ staff always recommend that individualsreturn to their physician/healerto discuss the information they find.

Ifindividuals are familiar with computers and Internet health research strategies,they can use the equipment independently to do health and wellness relatedresearch.

Ifindividuals aren’t sure how to find the health information they need, ourfriendly staff will guide them with their Internet research. 

Friendlystaff can lead individuals through the Internet process in a one-on-one settingor individuals can give it a try for themselves, at their own pace, askingquestions when necessary.

8. What is Staff Direct Research?

Ifindividuals aren’t able to do research or don’t have the time to do theresearch, friendly staff can do it for them. Stop by, give us a call, fax ore-mail information requests. There is no fee; donations accepted.

Yes.Health Maps is not a place to conduct business such as developing businesscards, flyers, or product advertising materials; copying; faxing; e-mailing, except within the guideline provided above; or politicallobbying.

11.What if individuals don’t know how to use the computer?

HealthMaps’ staff is aware that many people find computers and the Internet scary.The inviting, warm, quiet, private and safe atmosphere at Tutu’s House, alongwith the “heart to heart” connections here, lessen fear and reluctance.

Avariety of beginning computer classes in a small group setting are available.Individuals can also call and schedule a one-on-one appointment to learn skills.

Whetherindividuals realize it or not, each has their own plan, or “map”, for health. Each day individualsmake choices that affect their health and wellness. Knowledge gained throughinformation research helps individualsmake informed choices regarding theirhealth. In the Health Maps program knowledge becomes the key that unlocks thepower of choice and lets each individualtake control of their health andlife.
